Bits and pieces

I’ve finished my book review [Gerry B's Book Reviews], so I can put a few words together before dinner.

It’s a cool day here in Florida, 50s but feels 40s, and most people are walking around with jackets and hoodies up. Mind you I’m aware that it’s single digits (F) in Canada, and so 40s and 50s probably look pretty good. The other advantage we have is that it will be back up to 70s by the end of the week.

In keeping with the above, there are an increasing number of Ontario plates in the parking lot. They’re all saying, “Hey, we’re Canadian eh,” but they’re still wearing their winter coats just the same.

Tonight’s dinner menu is an open-face beef (prime rib) sandwich, $8.99, which I think I will order, but otherwise afternoons are not the best time at Sluggers. For one thing I have an on-going struggle with the door to the bar. If I have asked once, I have asked two-score times to have it closed, but someone always manages to leave it open. It’s not only the noise, but it is also a draft that comes this way.

An internationally acclaimed  and prolific Canadian artist passed away January 4th, 2012, Steve Walker, but I have yet to see a single word about his passing in any Canadian media.

I cannot help but compare this neglect to the coverage being given to the passing of Whitney Houston, who was a)  not Canadian, and b) hardly a poster girl for wholesome living.

It is this sort of oversight that frustrates me, BIG TIME. Canada has a wonderful history, a plethora of accomplishments and talent, but unless it’s foreign or multicultural we–and the world–seldom get to hear of it.

End of rant. :)

Until next time,

Gerry

  1. I was a fan of Houston, but I do agree about the coverage. We don’t get all the information we should get. When I speak with people who aren’t getting their information online, and all they are getting is information from the mainstream media, I can spot it instantly. I often watch British TV because I get more information there than from US media.

What I would do if I were you is write a short post about Steve Walker yourself. You have your own platform right here and you can let people know. You’d be surprised at how many Steve Walker fans will goolge his name and discover something you’ve written. This is definitely something I would want to know. I’ve seen his work in galleries in P’town. And I knew nothing about it.

This was basically all I could find about him. http://popgoesthenews.blogspot.com/2012/02/canadian-artist-steve-walker-dead-at-50.html

Thank you so much for your comment and suggestion.

I am not sure I have enough information to write a eulogy for Steve, but I’ll have a look at it.

In the meantime, I have already written a note to the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) to point out their neglect in not covering this important story.

Thank you once again for dropping by.
